The methods of speed control for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drives employ sensors for position or speed measurement and control. These sensors are highly prone to breakage. The conventional methods of speed control also lack adaptability towards parameter variations. This work proposes a sensorless adaptive PID controller for PMSM drives which integrates the PID controller with adaptive mechanism to deal with the time varying system parameters. The sensorless control not only reduces the cost and size of the motor but also improves the drives reliability and accuracy. A Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) is proposed for the estimation of speed of the rotor. The performance of the sensorless adaptive PID controller is then compared with the conventional PID controller.
