Worldwide Smart Grids are emerging nowadays as foremost concern infrastructure upgrade programs. The Smart Grid paradigm represents a transition towards an intelligent, digitally enhanced, two-way power delivery grid envisioned to materialize as a properly designed plug-and-play integration of smart Multiple Micro-Grids. These all are envisioned to be interconnected through dedicated control & communication highway for signal, command, data and power transfer. Exchange of information among power system actors is the key to success of Smart Multiple Micro-Grids. Exceptional concerns are being given to the design of efficient and robust communication network capable of managing operation and control of the coming generation power grid smartly. For the rationale new wired and wireless technologies are budding in addition to the previously applied ones to help upgrade the existing power grid. This paper provides a brief overview of smart grid communications requirements and the established interoperability standards. The authors also present a bird's eye view on the progress of wired and wireless communication technologies for smart grid communication infrastructure. The authors have proposed and implemented new micro grid control & measurement way by employing Virtual Wi-Fi routers for communications amongst various entities of the smart micro grid. Standalone devices have also been converted to virtual router for integration in the network by using virtual utilities.
