High-Efficiency Floating Bidirectional Power Flow Controller for Next-Generation DC Power Network

For realization of flexible power flow control for DC power networks, we have proposed a bidirectional power flow controllerrn(BPFC) based on a bidirectional buck-boost converter. It intentionally generates additional voltage difference between twornterminals. Thus, it is possible to control the power flow. However, we have not investigated efficiency of BPFC for power flowrncontrol in detail. Since many power converters are expected to be installed in future DC power networks, efficiency investigationrnis vitally important. In this paper, we first reveal energy efficiency of BPFC and study ways to improve the efficiency. Then, wernpropose a novel structure of BPFC that drastically improves the efficiency. We call the proposed structure, floating bidirectionalrnpower flow controller (F-BPFC). Efficiency and characteristics of F-BPFC are compared with those of BPFC by somernexperiments, and the superiority is clarified in this paper.
