Static Var Compensators (SVC) mainly connected to high voltage transmission systems are well stablished in the Mexican power system since the eighties. Some factors will however change the way of operating the system in a reliable way: large-scale integration of renewable generation, industrial growth of steel and automobilist industries in some regions, implementation of smart grid, establishment of a grid code and a new electric industry law allowing the private sector to participate freely in the generation and sale of electricity. In this way, it is expected that other types of shunt dynamic reactive power compensators and control features will be installed in the Mexican grid in the next coming years. The paper covers some aspects of this new generation of shunt dynamic compensators as well some of control functions and system aspects to be considered for making the new challenges to the operation of the Mexican system less problematic and invisible to the electricity consumers.
