Reactive power dispatch is one of the primary tasks in the operation and control of a power system. This paper presents Goal Attainment method to solve the reactive power dispatch (RPD) problem. Reactive power dispatch is carried out to reduce real power losses, to improve the voltage profile and voltage stability in a power system. Goal Attainment method is a reliable optimization technique for obtaining near global optimization. For multi-objective optimization problems the Goal Attainment method is a powerful method to find the best compromising solution. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed Goal attainment based approach, it is implemented for reactive power dispatch in the standard IEEE 30-bus test system. The obtained results have been compared with the reported results using Genetic Algorithm based fuzzy goal programming, Differential Evolutionary technique and optimization Toolbox. On comparison, the Goal attainment based approach is found to be superior in terms of solution quality and speed.
