In wind energy conversion systems (WECS), efficiency is of prime importance. For Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) based systems, to ensure maximum output, losses must be minimized. Reduction in reactive power may also facilitate an increased extraction of active power. This objective can be fulfilled by exercising proper control over direct axis rotor current (Idr) and quadrature axis rotor current (Iqr). This work embodies a logical approach for determining the value of Idr and Iqr which would yield maximum power from the DFIG. The aforementioned approach corresponds to a practical system because it concerns with minimization of reactive power. Most other works develop control schemes in which reactive power is considered zero. Simulation analysis using MATLAB 2010 has been done for validating the concepts mentioned in this paper.
