Intumescent Fireproofing of LPG Storage Vessels for API 752 Siting Compliance

The lowest cost alternative to be API 752 compliant for processing plants with fractionation may be a passive or active approach to BLEVE mitigation. A passive approach to delay a BLEVE by applying intumescent fireproofing to LPG process storage vessels may be the best alternative to give time for the safe egress of plant and neighboring personnel in plants with exposure risk within 4,000’ of LPG vessels. A passive mitigation approach can greatly minimize structural retrofits to existing plant buildings to be API 752 compliant. LPG vessel fireproofing also provides time for operations personnel to potentially stop a LPG vessel fire event and prevent a major incident. For processing plants with fractionation in remotely-located areas the lowest cost alternative for API 752 siting compliance may be an active approach by moving occupied buildings further from LPG vessels and designing for BLEVE blast and fire loads. Each plant facility is different and will need to be evaluated based on exposure risk within 4,000’ and siting study BLEVE and plant MCE predicted blast and fire loads.
