Recloser application possibilities and the related benefits at a Hungarian MV network

Recloser's medium voltage (MV) network application was examined, first of all on overhead line networks. Beyond the most obvious application (improving voltage continuity indices) some other aspects were also examined, like decreasing network losses or broadening protection possibilities without decreasing the indices. In that case, the security of supply should not decrease. The disposal and planning practices of pole mounted switches and remotely operated pole mounted switches and protection solutions were also reviewed. Several network simulation cases were run on different typical network formations. Aim of the examinations was to specify the voltage conditions and network loss ratio at different network looping conditions. The voltage outages of the consumers were also simulated. The impacts affecting the protection settings were also analysed. The possibility of recloser's implementation into the existing protection system was investigated. In this case, an important aspect is the grounding fault intervention. Furthermore, the application opportunities of reclosers at smart grids were reconsidered.
