The fault positions method is used in this work to analyze the performance of a distribution system against voltage sags during the occurrence of different (balanced and unbalanced) short-circuit types. After the voltage sags matrix has been determined for each short circuit type, the largest vulnerability area for each bus will be considered. The approach considers all thresholds that characterize the voltage sags, in order to prioritize the installation of power quality monitors on the buses more sensitized by the disturbance. The best location and the minimum required number of monitors will be determined by using the Branch and Bound algorithm to maximize the system observability. The IEEE 37-bus distribution system is used as a test system to illustrate the results obtained so far.
