Greening ACEEE: Extending Energy Savings and Sustainability in an Office Setting

This report examines the potential for energy-saving retrofits and practices that can bernadopted by tenant organizations of leased commercial spaces within existing large, multitenantrnoffice buildings. The experiences of an energy efficiency organization are documented as itrninvestigated means to increase energy savings in a space it has leased for several years. Thisrnreport is written for the purpose of examining the experience of an individual organization inrnorder to inform the actions of other tenant organizations who are looking to improve the energyrnefficiency of their leased office spaces. Special emphasis is placed on the tenant–building ownerrnrelationship and the prospect of improving office energy efficiency through coordination andrninteraction.rnThis report is centered on a unique case study of an organization with an already energysavvyrnand efficiency focused office culture as it implemented minor energy-saving practices andrnbehavioral programs that inform best practices and help shape behavior. The organization’srninteractions and relationships related to energy efficiency improvements (both current andrnhistoric) with building owners, utilities, and building administrative staff are detailed, as well asrnthe opportunities available for tenant organizations to influence whole-building efficiencyrnimprovements and building operations.
