In wireless applications the antenna pattern is shaped so a to cancel interfering signals and produce strong beam towards the wanted signal. Such antenna system is called smart antenna system. Smart antenna solves the problem of forward path in mobile communication in particular. For getting information of direction of signals many methods are in practice. Mathematical calculations are tedious in most of the methods. This paper presents a modified particle swarm optimization algorithm (MPSO) to optimization the tap weights of the steering vector smart antenna system. For reducing mathematical burden we consider a reference signal similar to desired signal. The fitness (relative) error is compared with original particle swarm algorithm (PSO). The results show that proposed method is better by optimizing at faster rate than PSO.
