Integrating renewables into grids can expose the system to issues that need addressing lest the functionality of the grid be impaired.Such issues can involve voltage fluctuations,frequency deviations,and deterioration of power quality.To comply with Grid Code requirements,wind farms often require dynamic reactive power compensation.By utilization of FACTS devices such as SVC and STATCOM,grid functionality can be maintained and even improved,enabling increased power transmission capacity over existing lines.The paper treats typical challenges in sub-transmission and distribution grids with considerable wind penetration.A recent case of real life experience is highlighted,where several 69 kV directly connected SVCs were installed for grid stabilization in conjunction with a high degree of wind penetration.Some salient design features of SVC and STATCOM are presented,as well.
