What are the Impacts of a cVOC Group Regulation? Questions Answered with a Case Study at Suffolk County Water Authority

The anticipated cVOC Rule is expected to add additional contaminants to the currentlyrnregulated VOCs. Some of these compounds will require different analytical methods and respond torntreatment differently compared to the currently regulated contaminants. Moreover, the standards arernexpected to be significantly lower compared to the current VOC regulations, posing additional treatmentrnchallenges. Based on what is known to be included in the future cVOC regulation, the American WaterrnWorks Association (AWWA) funded a project to analyze the regulatory impacts using a water utilityrnwhich currently employs extensive treatment to remove several VOCs from their groundwater. SuffolkrnCounty Water Authority (SCWA) on Long Island, NY has experienced source water contamination fromrnlocal industry and agriculture and has installed more than 100 carbon treatment facilities. This paperrnwill present an evaluation on how SCWA may be impacted by this upcoming regulation.
