In this paper, we conduct experimental study on the feasibility of synchronizing chaotic Colpitts circuit using particle filter, as well as its application to secure communication. The chaotic signals corrupted by channel noise are processed digitally by particle filter in the receiver with parameter mismatches, in order to obtain synchronized state of the transmitting circuit. Experiment results indicate that synchronization can be achieved with this synchronization scheme even under the conditions of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and severe circuit parameter mismatches. Furthermore, a chaotic secure communication system based on this synchronization method is constructed and verified, and bit-error-rate (BER) of this system is investigated over different SNR and symbol periods.
