In earthquake-resistant design of reinforced concrete structures, it is generally necessary to permit some degree of damage; otherwise the design would be too costly. In order to implement this philosophy properly, models for assessing structural damage within the context of a random earthquake environment are required. One objective of the seismic design process is to limit the locations of damage and to ensure that damage at these locations is within acceptable limits. To facilitate the quantification of damage in analysis and design, it is helpful to define damage in terms of a numerical ‘damage index’. Damage indices are potentially valuable design tools, since they provide a means by which different design or retrofit options can be compared objectively. Damage models are usually based on the maximum deformations, hysteretic energies and structural deteriorations. Damage indices are suitable tools for quantifying numerically the damage in structures sustained under earthquake loading. In this work damage index is calculated by Park - Ang model, Rao model, Meyer model and Sadeghi model for the exterior beam-column joint and were compared.
