Equistar Chemicals, LP implemented a Real Time Optimization projectrnat its Channelview, Texas complex, which combines two olefins units andrndownstream recovery units into one RTO model. The project implementation isrnaimed at creating alignment between the long-term planning optimization modelsrnand the plant level controls and operation.rnThe multi-unit complex model utilizes a blend of rigorous and simplifiedrnmethodologies at varying degrees. The underlying multivariable controllerrnempirical models were utilized to maintain balance among RTO modelrnconsistency, speed and robustness. The model was built to optimize andrnenhance the overall profitability of the complex while traditional RTO approachesrnfocus more on individual unit optimizations. This paper discusses thernmethodology, challenges and opportunities involved in the implementation andrnmaintenance of the multi-unit RTO application.
