A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to perform the discrete optimization of reinforced concrete frame(RC) structure subject to combinations of multi-loads based on Chinese design code. The optimum detail design is achieved by constructing the data sets containing different available reinforcement bar diameter in a pre-specified pattern, satisfying the user specified rules for bar and other requirements in provisions. An automatic generating feasible region technique based on local strength constraints is developed to improve the efficiency of genetic algorithm. Finally, the effectiveness and practicality of the optimization technique is illustrated through an actual application to the design of a 22-story frame building structure.
