The impact of dissolved organic matter (DOM), empty bed contact time (EBCT), and pretreatment on granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption of trace organic contaminants is investigated. Results indicate that increasing the background DOM results in shorter bed life of the GAC for trace organic contaminants. Results also indicate that when very high levels of removal are required, > 90%, the GAC media is more efficiently used at longer EBCTs, but when < 80% removal is required the GAC media is more efficiently used at shorter EBCTs because it is less subject to fouling. Pretreatments of coagulation, ozonation, and MIEX? were found to affect the breakthrough of the probe compounds.
