Conceptual design of near infrared spectroscopy instrumentation for skin moisture measurement

In recent years, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has gained wide acceptance in the measurement of water content of skin. In addition, NIR spectroscopy is a fast and non-invasive technique that tenders many advantages for application in various fields. Advanced measurement devices have been developed in examination of skin moisture including electrical conductance and capacitance. NIR, DermaLab Moisture Module and Scalar Moisture Checker are three instruments used to measure the moisture content of skin. Measurements were performed at five anatomic body sites (forearm, upper arm, palm, forehead and cheek) under the control environment (45–55% RH, 20–22°C). The preliminary result obtained from this paper will be used in the development of optical instruments for skin moisture measurement.
