UL will bring valuable information for this topic, due to long experience on electrical subassemblies and components. The design of components, control panels, connectors and cables will significantly increase the WTGS lifetime and safety. Accepting the rough environment, where the wind turbines are used, means additional requirements for its components. Most of today′s components are not designed or certified to be used in such environment. Often too much focus is kept on performance and durability has been left as 2nd priority. While the wind market is changing from ′demand higher than supply′ to ′supply higher than demand′, the competition expects more reliable components, subassemblies -and wind turbines. Existing WTGS standards worldwide thoroughly address mechanical and structural aspects, power quality, lightning protection, grid interconnection and only few details on electrical construction requirements. New UL Standards for WTGS are based on ANSI and include specific information for component electrical safety.
