The spatial characteristics of LUCC and a series of environmental effects caused by LUCC in Xi’an Region are analyzed based on TM images acquired in 1990 and 2000, integrated with RS and GIS means and Markov model.The results reveal that:(1) the areas of built land are enlarged, but the areas of waterland,cultivated lands,Barren land and woodland are reduced.The increased area of built land was at the cost of encroaching a wealth of cultivated land,thus, the pressure of urbanization becomes more serious;(2) The theoretical trend values of LUCC in the study area are calculated by Markov model,and the resultsshow that the transformation from other land use types into builtland is the most dominant trend,revealing a rapid urbanization in the study area. (3)The trend of LUCC in the study area is predicted with Markov model,which demonstrates that the areas of waterland,cultivated land,Barren land and woodland will be continuously reduced in the future,and the contradiction between the built land and the conservation of cultivated land will be more serious.The results show that transformation from other land use types into builtland appears much more dominant in the study region and Xi’an City to a certain extent, is in a rapid urbanization stage.
