CANADIAN OIL SANDS CRUDES: WHATGOES WHERE

The paper explores the dynamics of oil sands market development. Oil sands supplyrnscenarios are developed, with analysis of alternative pipeline routes to either traditional orrnpotential refining markets, including overseas markets. Pipeline operators have presented arnwide range of infrastructure options, targeting the U.S. Gulf Coast, East Coast and Pacificrnmarket regions. The use of heavy bitumen blends or synthetic crudes in these markets wouldrnimpact refiners as well as oil sands producers. Given the diverse nature of refining in eachrnmarket, and uncertainties relating to infrastructure development costs, comparison ofrnalternatives has typically been a complex problem for all stakeholders. For this paper, Purvin &rnGertz has used a novel modeling approach with a consistent framework to analyze the mostrnessential question for oil sands players: What Goes Where, and How?rnThe paper is summarized as follows with references to the presentation slides.
