INTEGRATED RESOURCE PLANNING IN THE NEW AWWA M50 MANUAL

This paper summarizes Chapter 13 “Integrated Resource Planning” in the new second edition ofrnAWWA manual M50. Integrated Resource Planning or IRP is viewed as a process to tie all ofrnthe individual elements of water resources planning together. A model IRP process is describedrnto provide a structure for preparing an integrated resource plan. The major differences betweenrnconventional water resource planning and IRP include giving equal consideration to demandrnmanagement and new supply development, consideration of risk and reliability with shortagernmanagement as an option, extensive public participation in the process. Selection of anrnintegrated resource plan should consider cost-effectiveness, supply reliability, environmentalrnimpacts, financing, and public acceptability.
