Effect of Pigment Properties on Coating Structure as Measured by AFM

Cross sections of a range of laboratory coated samples including clay and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC)rnpigments with various particle size and particle size distribution (p.s.d.) were mapped with atomic force microscopyrnin the contact mode. The samples had the same styrene butadiene latex binder content. Subsequently, through imagernanalysis techniques the pore structure was characterized from the cross-sectional topography images. In agreementrnwith previous research, it was found that the coating porosity and the coating pore size are correlated to the meanrnpigment size and to the width of the particle size distribution for kaolin clay. It was observed that PCC presented arnmore numerous population of pores and smaller pore size when compared to kaolin clay with the same particle size.
