The Future of Calcium Carbonate: A Short Overview of Developments

This short overview, constructed for the pigment development roundtable, is designed to give a briefrninsight into the development trends and underlying technical strategy behind the growth of calciumrncarbonate in the paper industry. The demands for functionality are seen strongly in both the traditionalrnapplication areas of filler and coating pigment, and manifest by the new opportunities for specialtyrnapplications in the fields of additives, nanotechnology, printability, including the digital growth areas suchrnas inkjet, and for properties of ab- and adsorbtivity. From the bases of the ground and precipitatedrntechnologies of today, an outline is given highlighting the advancements being made in the theories andrnmodeling of sorption processes, together with specialized developments in the areas of structuring andrnsurface modification designed to meet the criteria set by the challenges of today and tomorrow.
