High speed continuous ink jet systems continue to make inroads into the transactional document marketrnworldwide. Transactional documents are monthly statements received detailing bank, credit card, or otherrnbilling transactions. This market has traditionally been served by printing variable information withrnmonochrome laser printers onto fixed color pre-printed forms.rnThe advantage of continuous ink jet systems is their high speed capability and the ability to apply fullrnprocess color at these speeds. This eliminates the need for preprint in addition to the indirect cost ofrnlogistics and inventorying many rolls of different preprinted images. More importantly this allows thernfixed color portion of the image to be varied, enabling more effective targeted messages to the individualrnrecipient. Thus a transactional document becomes a transactional communication with the customer.rnA key element for the successful transition from laser to inkjet is an understanding of the role of paper.rnThis presentation provides an overview of the continuous ink jet printing system, a brief look at the marketsrnit serves and a review of the substrates used and the paper properties required.
