BP has successfully deployed a web based projectrnmanagement application across the global wells teams tornsupport common processes used in well delivery. Widespreadrnuse of the application is now made in drilling and completionsrnactivities and other planning functions within the wellsrncommunity. This is just one of the tools that have contributedrnto the 19% drilling and completions performancernimprovement recorded in BP during 2003.rnThe project's goal is to standardise the use of proven commonrnprocesses, creating a shared repository for critical knowledge,rnreducing time for project initiation and planning, managingrnrisk and supporting the stage gate decision making. Anrnextensive management reporting capability also reduces thernadministrative burden.rnPositive results include quicker start-up of new teams andrnimproved planning. The keys to success are organisationalrncommitment to the common processes and the use of provenrnproject management practices in drilling and completionsrnactivities. Behaviours have also been addressed. Over 90% ofrnthe application was based on established, commerciallyrnavailable software, increasing reliability, reducingrnimplementation risk and enabling the developers to focus onrnthe key functionality and user interface. The application'srnprocess templates are regularly reviewed and are updatedrnperiodically to ensure continuous improvement and long termrnsustainability.This paper contains a summary of the common processes andrnpresents a case study of the project, its goals, results, criticalrnsuccess factors, challenges and lessons learned, supported byrnseveral examples. The paper will be of interest to bothrnmanagers and engineers.
