In the recent past, several solutions havernbeen proposed to improve TCP performance over wiredrnand wireless links. In this context, the main issue that arisesrnwhen dealing with different TCP proposals is the necessityrnof a common benchmark environment, where each solutionrncould be tested and evaluated. This is a fundamental steprnfor a fair comparison and the development itself of thernvarious TCP proposals. With this aim, the authors set up arntest bed based on Linux machines, to compare performancernof different TCP proposals considering several scenarios inrnterms of delay, losses and congestion. The adoption of thernLinux operating system is essential to exercise a fullrncontrol on the network protocols, as well as the possibilityrnto test the majority of TCP proposals present in thernliterature. The main contribution of our work is representedrnby the conception and the realization of a novel "MultirnTCP" kernel which allows the user to easily select one ofrnthe many versions of the TCP protocol implemented,rnand/or some additional features. This tool is complementedrnby a friendly user interface and a powerful log enginernwhich proved very valuable in carrying out thoroughrnpacket level analysis.
