BENEFITS AND USE OF OPERATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHYSYSTEMS FOR DRIFT FORECASTS

The use of products delivered from operational oceanographyrnsystems to oil spill drift applications is investigated. The evaluationrnis conducted with the French operational oil spill drift forecastrnsystem MOTHY and three operational oceanography systems,rnMERCATOR (MERCATOR-OCEAN, France), FOAM (MetOffice,rnUK) and MFS (INGV, Italy).rnThe present work focuses on evaluating the effects of introducingrnlarge scale currents in the MOTHY system. This effect is investigatedrnin the Bay of Biscay and in the Western part of thernMediterranean Sea. Preliminary results are most encouraging.
