SPACE-BASED AIS FOR GLOBAL MARITIME TRAFFICMONITORING

The universal shipborne Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a recently introducedrnsystem for traffic monitoring and safety at sea. In this paper we investigate the possibil-ityrnof extending the system to space for global maritime surveillance, and give sugges-tionsrnfor how the system can be optimized for Long-Range Identification and Trackingrn(LRIT).
