Proposed Revisions to the NAICS Codes For Modeling and Simulation

For the past two years, the role of modeling and simulation activity in the U.S. economy has been studied and the results have been presented at the 2002 and 2003 SCSC Computer Simulation Summer Conferences. The two papers reported the research findings and raised critical issues for leaders in the field of modeling and simulation to discuss. These two papers contain the details of the research and should be used as references. The intent of this paper is to provide a summary of the recommended NAICS code changes sent to the Economic Classification Policy Committee (ECPC) in May to clarify the role of modeling and simulation in the economy. It also contains a discussion of the issues that were raised as a by-product of an April meeting with the ECPC Chair, the review of the newly acquired military modeling and simulation contract information on NAICS codes and the preparation of the recommendations. In addition, because this effort is long-term in nature, future activities for the involved societies are suggested.
