The New Zealand design procedure for compositernbeams incorporates provisions for headed, weldedrnshear stud design shear capacity developed forrnNorth American standards in the 1970’s, modifiedrnwith a partial strength reduction factor incorporatedrnin 1992. Following New Zealand and internationalrntests which showed shortcomings with thesernequations, the topic of composite beam designrnusing shear studs and trapezoidal decking was reevaluatedrnin 2003 and a series of experimental testsrnundertaken to determine the adequacy of proposedrnnew provisions.rnThis paper covers the following: the changes made,rnthe previous reports on over-estimating the studrncapacity, the testing of eleven shear stud push-rnthrough specimens and the results of these tests.rnAlso included are constructional issues such as studrnpositioning, the effect of decking edge in primaryrnbeams and the influence of the self weight of thernslab on the transverse bending moment acting onrnthe beam and its effect on the shear studs. Thernresults of these tests have allowed us to makernrecommendations for shear stud capacity, whichrnmore accurately reflect the failure modes thatrnoccurred, and to incorporate these into revisions tornthe composite beam design procedure for beamsrnsupporting concrete slabs on profiled steel decks.
