Nanostructured magnetic materials: Research activities at IFW-Dresden

Soft and hard magnetic materials with a microstructure in the ten to hundred nanometer regimes, respectively, are the subject of ongoing research and development. Our work on nanostructured rare earth permanent magnets is aimed at maximizing the energy product by inducing a texture or enhancing the remanence in a multiphase iso-tropic nanocomposite. But also the corrosion behaviour of this material class is of interest for applications. A further class of nanostructured magnetic materials, which are currently studied and developed, are hard magnetic films for potential applications in magnetic microelec-tromechanical systems (MEMS), micro-structured magnetic sensors, logic devices and magnetic data storage. In the field of nanocrystalline soft magnetic ribbons there are still open questions, especially concerning their magnetic microstructure, although these materials have been applied for several years by now. This article reviews our current research activities on the mentioned material classes.
