A CONTINUOUS PROCESS TO OBTAIN PETROLEUM AND COAL TAR-BASED MESOPHASE PITCHES

A novel method for the continuous preparation of mesophase pitch was developed. The method was applied to bothrnpetroleum and coal-tar pitches, although the results were rather different depending on the pitch used. The method is based inrnthe different density of the mesophase and the isotropic phase that coexist in the thermally treated pitches. A reactor with tworntemperature zones is the key part of the new equipment. Mesophase forms in the upper part at temperatures close to 430 ℃,rnand then settles down in the lower part, which is maintained at a lower temperature. Mesophase can be extracted from thernreactor continuously as it is produced. Mesophase pitches with anisotropic contents as high as 97 vol.% and softening pointsrnaround 330 ℃ have been produced by this method.
