The ideas that bacisity of the carbons is determined by their reductive ability to oxygen have been developing. Usingquantum-chemical calculations (semi-empirical method AM-1) it is shown that ordinary and also nitrogen-containing basiccarbons containig 3-4% of the chemically bound oxygen have the highest electron-donor ability. For the first time reductionof oxygen with regular and nitrogen-containing cabrons has studied in the cell with separated electrodes. Molecularmechanisms of reduction of oxygen to anions OH—and hydrogen peroxide via the stage of the initial formation of superoxideO2÷ by active carbons have been proposed.
