Web Change Monitoring by JWebWatch

There is a proliferation of news sites on the World Wide Web and hence, it is becoming increasingly harder for journalists to monitor the news on such sites. In response to this need, a software tool JWebWatch was developed to provide journalists with a suite of tools for checking the latest news on the web. The functions supported by JWebWatch include text extraction, summarization, intelligent image filtering, multimedia file storage and replay and file maintenance. One particular feature of this tool is the ability to monitor changes in news sites and report such changes. The paper reviews related existing systems that carry out web monitoring. This is followed by an analysis and design of the issues related to web monitoring. A string-matching algorithm based on the Longest Common Subsequence (LCS) approach was adopted. Examples of tests carried out are given before a conclusion is made.
