The fuel cell is promising to be the primary power source of a zero-emission vehicle. A fuel cell drive system specially designed for electrical vehicles has been developed. The drive system consists of a PEM fuel cell source, an auxiliary battery source, two DC/DC power converters, and a DC/AC inverter. For the design and simulation, the system model has been developed, including the dynamics of the fuel cell, battery, both DC/DC converters, the DC/AC inverter, and the induction motor. For the induction motor model development, off-line estimation is applied to obtain the motor parameters for qd-axis model. Control algorithms have been developed for the system and a sliding-mode observer is used to obtain system states and achieve sensorless control. An alternative estimation method is developed to implement low speed observation. Discrete-time sliding mode control is used for the dual loop motor control structure. Experimental results have been presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control for the drive system.
