A new generation of hydraulic presses specifically designed for the production of hard metal inserts and results obtained in the practical application will be introduced. The concept incorporates essential innovations for small lot sizes typical for insert production, thus meeting requirements for minimum setup time and maximum precision to reduce the expenditure in subsequent grinding. Tooling is mounted directly into the press eliminating the typically required die set and utilizing the presses precision guiding system. Benefits include a new dimension of precision and reduced set-up time. Opposing compaction, stationary die, precise measuring systems, closed-loop control, maximum rigidity of the press and wear-resisting guide mechanisms, allow positive cutting tips to be finish-pressed with tolerances of only a few thousandths of a mm, without danger of tool breakage. Quick-clamping tool systems and an interface for automatic tool identification constitute the potential for fully automatic tool change. A new concept of user-friendly machine programming ensures quick and easy operation and optimization in the production of parts, minimizing press operator input. Robotic automation systems allow for automatic removal and deposit of the compacts, quality control, stacking of sintering trays, and cleaning of pressing tools.
