The present work describes the experimental set-up and basic characteristics of a technique for melt atomization with a confined nozzle using hot atomizing gas up to 1200℃ at 25 bar inlet pressure. The applied heater concept and its feasibility for large scale operation are explained. The results of numerical simulations of the gas flow field are presented, which have been performed for the near nozzle area without the presence of melt in order to follow the changes appearing at elevated gas inlet temperatures. Basic properties of the confined nozzles used for cold gas atomization and the newly constructed one for hot gas application are described on the base of comparative investigations under cold gas conditions.
