Sintered components are sometimes subject to applications for which wear phenomena and the most severe stresses act on the surface of a part; consequently, for these cases hard surface skins are required, coupled with good toughness characteristics to the core. These properties are typically allowed by surface hardening treatments, like nitriding, nitrocarburizing, carbonitriding and carburising. With the aim of verifying the adaptability to thermochemical treatment of the new Astaloy CrM grade a research activity to study the effects of carbonitriding and nitrocarburising treatments on wear resistance has been carried out. In order to have a helpful comparison the treatments have been performed also on series of samples manufactured using Distaloy AB powders.
