This paper presents the first work on identifying material and process factors of importance in green machining. Nearly 99% reduction in power consumption was observed for machining green instead of wrought materials. Cutting forces and surface roughness were strongly influenced by both powder and binder characteristics. It was observed that green machining afforded surface finishes suitable for routine applications. The potential for nearly complete materia l usage, lubricant-free operation, and much lower cutting forces indicate a tremendous growth opportunity for powder metallurgy in the area of green machining.
