SEWER LATERAL RENEWAL CRUCIAL TO “TOTAL SYSTEM” SUCCESS

Renewal of sewer service laterals is often neglected as part of a comprehensive sewer renewalrnprogram for I/I reduction. This is likely due to a lack of information about demonstratedrneffectiveness. This paper discusses why lateral renewal must be considered as an integral part ofrnany I/I reduction program. Benefit/costs, renewal methods, and strategies for application arernpresented. Additionally, the results of a literature review of I/I reduction attributable to lateralrnrenewal will be presented. One case documented an additional 20% I/I reduction, andrnelimination of overflows for an incremental 10% increase of construction costs
