Lessons Learned from the Development of ATC-50

Applied Technology Council's publication ATC-50 was a three-year research and development effort. The authors of this paper were the lead consultants involved in developing a simple two-page form that allows a trained inspector or an engineer to grade the expected seismic performance of a typical single-family detached wood frame dwelling. As part of the research, the form was tested on 500 homes in the City of Los Angeles and 50 of these homes were retrofitted. This paper highlights the lessons learned during the development and testing of ATC-50.
