The effect of transient operation of phosphoric-acid fuel-cells stack (PAFC) on heat transfer, and on temperature and electric current density distributions in the electrode plates were investigated. The investigation used an experimental setup that used water and engine oil as coolants. The transient electrode current density distribution and temperature distribution were calculated as functions of coolant Reynolds numbers and stack pressure during two transient operational modes: start-up and shut-down modes. The coolants Reynolds numbers used were in the range of 1250 to 6167 for water, and 15 to 80 for oil respectively. And, the stack pressure ranged from zero to 3500 KPa with an electrode average temperature between 25℃ and 190℃. The calculated transient current density ranged from 0.028 Amp/cm~2 to 0.368 Amp/cm~2. The calculated data deviated by a maximum of 8% when compared to previously generated experimental data.
