BIO-FUELED SOLID OXIDE FUEL CELL FOR RURAL ENERGY APPLICATIONS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Given the high unit prices currently paid by rural people in developing countries, a large, early, premium power market exists for relatively small fuel cell power systems. The high volume manufacturing opportunity provided by this market provides a path to achieve the lower unit costs that are necessary for penetration of more price sensitive markets in developed countries. An important requirement for the successful penetration of the rural market is the ability to use locally available biomass fuels. CPC and Ascent have demonstrated the technical feasibility of such an integrated Bio-fueled Solid Oxide Fuel Cell System that with further scale up can take its place as one of the renewable power options able to serve the large rural distributed generation market for mini-grids and off-grid individual homes.
