Comparing Performance of Direction-of-Arrival Estimation Methods for Wideband Signal Sources

In this paper, the performance results of direction-of-arrival estimation methods for multiple wideband signal sources using arbitrary antenna array are compared. The Coherent Signal-Subspace method with three focusing techniques: Steered Co-variance Matrix (STCM), Unitary Focusing Matrix (UFM), Two-Sided Correlation Transformation (TCT) and the Incoherent Signal-Subspace method are considered and compared in simulations. To assess the performance, the following parameters are determined: bias and standard deviation of estimate, resolution threshold signal to noise ratio (SNR), minimum source spacing, and minimum number of snapshots. Based on simulation results, it is shown that TCT and UFM have more advantages than others, such as lower bias and deviation, lower resolution threshold, lower minimum source spacing, and shorter observation time.
