Electron Beam Web Coating ― State of the Art and Potential for New Applications

Electron Beam Web Coating is a mature technology, well proven in production for Magnetic Tape since the middle of the 80's. Based on the increasing demand of the packaging industry for Transparent Barrier Coating, a new generation of Electron Beam Web Coater, the TOPBEAM ~R was developed in the middle of the 90's. The TOPBEAM ~R allows for a flexible and robust system for high speed evaporation of different Transparent Barrier Coatings. For functional coatings with high requirements for adhesion, structure and uniformity, sputtering still is the process of first choice, however, recent developments have shown, that with improvement of process control, the uniformity of special eb-evaporated layers is very close to the uniformity of sputtered layers. This paper gives an update on the state of the art of technology for Transparent Barrier Coating with eb-evaporation and shows recent results of our work regarding improvements of coating uniformity.
