Regarding the rotary membrane separation system, which the laminated membrane disks are rotated during membrane separation, the effects of several types of baffle including full-partition inserted between laminated membrane disks on the membrane separation characteristics were investigated. The results show that the permeate flux was hardly affected by membrane rotation without baffle, but that the flux was dramatically improved with the baffle. The results also show that the permeate flux in the baffled case was larger than that in the full-partitioned case. This suggests that the baffle enhances turbulence in the space between the disks because the permeate flux increases with the shear rate given to the solution near the membrane surface. Furthermore, the stability of permeate flux and velocity measurements by a laser Doppler velocimeter suggests that the baffle enhances the exchange of the solution between the gap in two membrane disks and the flow channel.
