Syncrude Canada Ltd.’s Edmonton Research Centrernevaluated narrow fractions of light gas oils (LGOs),rnobtained from various upgrading processes of Athabascarnoilsands bitumen, as diesel and jet fuels. The studyrnrevealed that when appropriate processes and distillationrnboiling ranges are selected, oilsands bitumen canrnproduce diesel and jet fuels that meet stringentrnenvironmental regulations and future productrnspecifications. The relationship among the boiling range, rncetane number (CN), smoke point, and other propertiesrnsuch as aromatics, and sulfur and nitrogen content wasrninvestigated. New correlations to predict CN and smokernpoint were developed as a function of density, boilingrnranges by simulated distillation, and mono- and totalrnaromatics by supercritical fluid chromatography. Therncorrelations are used for process development andrnproduct marketing studies.
