In this study, a dry cutting method without using cutting fluid in order to protect the global environment is investigated. As one means of achieving this purpose, a new cooling system in which heat evolved in cutting operations is efficiently absorbed by the cutting tool is proposed. Briefly, a heat absorption tool through which it is possible to run a coolant inside a cutting insert and an insert holder is fabricated, and a dry cutting method using this cutting tool is proposed. As a result of cutting experiments using carbon steel and stainless steel as workpieces, in case of the proposed dry cutting method using the heat absorption tool, the tool wear can be reduced to less than one-half that in the case of the dry cutting method using a conventional tool. Moreover, it is found out that the extent of improvement in tool life using the proposed method is equal to or higher than that using the oil mist cutting method, one of the environmentally friendly semidry cutting methods. In addition, a dry cutting system with the practical heat absorption tool is proposed, and the effects of this system are clarified by a trial manufacture of the system and some cutting experiments using the system. In conclusion, it is clarified that the dry cutting method with the heat absorption tool is experimentally and practically effective as an environmentally adaptable cutting method.
